My Real Estate Story
I’ve been through several life stages, each presenting its own challenges and opportunities. My first career saw me rise through the ranks quickly and provide me with real responsibility. Then came my foray into business entrepreneurship, which resulted in failure as well as personal growth. Following that was perhaps the greatest risk taken thus far; our decision to relocate to Australia and for me to start a new career.
A little over a year ago, my son and I were having a discussion about real estate. He was considering potential real estate opportunities in the US, and he was interested in my opinion. From there, we somehow stumbled onto discussing my real estate career and the countless stories I had from that period in my life.
Our first home in Australia was the second floor of a two-storey home. That tiny two-bedroom apartment housed my wife and I, my son, and on occasion, my elderly mother. While it may seem that we were living on top of one another, we had all the space we needed. Now that my son is fully grown and living overseas, we’ve started to consider if and when we should downsize.
Moving to another city or continent is challenging. Making that move in your 40s is near impossible. You are consumed with succeeding in your life after you make that move. The last thing on your mind is something as sensational as early retirement.
When we arrived in Australia back in 2000, my son was 9 years of age. My wife and I made an agreement that we would provide the best life possible for our son. This is certainly a common motivation for most immigrants. It serves to justify the sweat and tears you will no doubt shed as you begin to restart your life in a foreign land.
Hi everyone! The following post is somewhat self-indulgent, but nevertheless well-intentioned. I was motivated to write this post by some of my friends. They had either recently quit or were let go from their positions, and felt a tremendous amount of dread in restarting their careers. Their stories encouraged me to reflect on my own past and the various pathways I travelled to get me to a successful real estate career, albeit beaten up and bruised from the journey!
Twenty years is a considerable time period in any profession. You have a large enough sample size of highs and lows, and a plethora of lessons… not to mention the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with it. One of the key aspects I neglected, during the time, was reflection. I can’t be too hard on myself, because when you’re focused and committed on building your career, you develop tunnel vision towards achieving that goal.
Welcome to my inaugural blog post! Whatever reason that brought you to this side of the Internet, I am grateful that you are here! I’ve spent the past few weeks reflecting on the highs and lows of my ordinary life which, however mundane it may have seemed at the time, was always touched by extraordinary moments that influenced my life trajectory.
